The Marietta-Cobb Museum Dispels Myths About Modern Art

The Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art announces a special weekend of activities this April featuring the book The Magic of Modern Art—How to Love Modern and Contemporary Art by Robyn Jamison, MFA.

For those who have struggled with liking or even accepting modern art, these events promise to engage viewers in a transformative experience. “After years of taking friends to museums and demonstrating to them how to interact with art, I knew I had to write a book about it,” said the author. “It has been so rewarding to watch people fall in love with modern and contemporary art—something they never dreamed could happen,” she said. Part of her process involves identifying and dispelling what she calls “counterproductive beliefs,” or put another way, that annoying mind chatter that gets in the way of simply enjoying and being with the art.   The weekend includes a special exhibition of art from the book, plus a selection of work by local artists, and curated by Jamison and Madeline Beck, Curator at the Museum, followed by a Magic of Modern Art Tour and book signing. Events begin Saturday, April 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. with the opening of the exhibit.

The art tour and book signing will follow Sunday, April 7 from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. The exhibition will remain on view through June 16, and features a combination of work by artists who were interviewed in the book, among others. Video selections from Ms. Jamison’s installation, “Woman as Object” will also be on view.    The Marietta-Cobb Museum, 30 Atlanta St SE, Marietta, GA 30060. Phone: (770) 528-1444. Museum Hours: Sat 11 – 4: Sun 1 – 4; Mon Closed; Tues – Fri 11 – 5.

Don’t Be Afraid of Modern Art

From: Woman Around Town

I admit it, I’m afraid of modern art. I avoid modern art exhibits, can count on one hand the number of times I’ve ventured into MoMA, and that was probably with one of my kids for a school project. It’s not something I’m proud of, but I’m willing to do my best to overcome it. That’s why Robyn Jamison’s recent release The Magic of Modern Art caught my eye.

Inspiring Conversations with Robyn Jamison of The Magic of Modern Art

From: Voyage Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Jamison.

Hi Robyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am an artist on a mission to make the magic and wonder of modern and contemporary art accessible to everyone. My goal is that being in the presence of modern and contemporary art to be a joyful, enriching experience—one that everyone eagerly anticipates, avidly soaks in and never gets over.

I have been an artist my entire life. There I was as a toddler—head down, bent over paper and crayons and paints and tissue paper and art book pictures. I have always loved everything having to do with art.
