Magic of Modern Art Moments #4
Hi Everybody! Those travels and engagements that I was telling you about in July have been happening!
Updates:
Audiobook: I made a fun discovery today. My wonderful public relations specialist, Harold Nicoll, sent me a draft of the press release announcing the publication of the audio version of The Magic of Modern Art. I discovered that the audio version is now available on fourteen different platforms! Last time I wrote to you, there were seven.
New York City: Since the last Magic of Modern Art Moments Newsletter, I spent an incredible week in New York City, motivated by the Jenny Holzer installation at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The exhibition was worth the trip in and of itself!
I saw a toe-curlingly delicious art show in a different art museum every single day (except the Guggenheim twice). I was thrilled to discover that a large part of the Whitney Biennial exhibition was still up. I was also able to get direct contact information for the education director there.
Not to miss the opportunity, I saw three fantastic Broadway shows with friends, all of which I highly recommend: Suffs, Water for Elephants and Hell’s Kitchen.
The workshops I was hoping to present didn’t come to fruition, but I made some lovely connections with artists and art organizations there. Who knows what could happen in the future?
Nazaré and Lisbon, Portugal: This first half of a two-country trip was especially heavenly because my husband, Otto, and I stayed with our dear, dear friend and Magic of Modern Art partner, Carol Winkler, and her wonderful husband David, also a beloved friend.
We saw great art in two places: The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon and the Buddha Eden Garden in Obidos. The day we visited the museum in Lisbon, we stopped for a delightful lunch at a nearby outdoor café and a group of young men turned up, turned on a boom box and entertained us with an impressive performance of hip hop dance including acrobatic stunts! Art in abundance!
Paris: Oooh, la la! It was just the best! We stayed in a beautiful apartment in the 16th Arrondissement, a few minutes’ drive from the Eiffel Tower. I am tempted to tell you all about the street where we were, the restaurants, the little pastry shop and café on the corner, the shops…but this is about The Magic of Modern Art.
The highlights of the trip from the standpoint of the arts were: meeting a fellow artist at a café across the street from the George Pompidou Centre from Malta (where we are now invited to visit); the hours spent experiencing the colossal contemporary collection at the Pompidou; the extraordinary jazz concert at tiny, out-of-the-way jazz club, Le Baiser Salé (The Salty Kiss) and the dance concert at the Théâtre National de La Dance. (Personal note – I was chosen from the audience at the dance concert to participate on stage!)
Seattle Area: This should be called Phoenix, because the workshop I’m going to do there definitely rose up out of the ashes! Since the last newsletter, the Bellevue Arts Museum closed its doors. No more need for docents while the museum is closed. It seemed that there was no more need for my workshops, either.
However, I had established a lovely rapport with the outgoing president of the docents. So, with the support of the docent president and the director of the museum, (along with the amazing group of loyal and supportive docents) we have created an event that will include both the docents and the public.
This workshop and Magic of Modern Art Tour will take place at the Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) on Tuesday, October 22nd from 10:30 A.M to 3:00 P.M., with a break for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 and an informal reception from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., where I will also sign books. Here’s a link to the information on the BAM website: The Magic of Modern Art at BAM. If you’re in the area, please come! Also, please share it with your friends!
